In last months I got a lot of link exchange requests. Some of them was 3 way link exchange request. 3 way link exchange means that site A links to site B but site B doesn't link back to site A (like in regular link exchange) but to site C.
The reason why some webmasters do that is simple - google doesn't give to links gained by link exchange to much value.
If you want to make 3 way link exchange be very careful. I got many request when webmaster asked me for a link to his primary site (and very quality site) but offered link back from low quality site. Here is an example: http://www.hostingobserver.com/ - look at this website. There are no useful information, it is nothing more then linkfarm.
How to exchange links without getting ripped off
When I exchange links with other websites I make these steps:
1. I look for quality website. I don't care about pagerank to much because quality website will gain some backlinks soon.
2. I look for related sites only. When I exchange links for SEO related website I will never exchange link with jokes site. Googlebot is intellingent and it can make difference between relevant link and unrelevant link.
3. Some webmasters disallow spiders to access the link page. It is good idea to have a look if exists robots.txt by calling domain.com/robots.txt.
4. Then I look if the site where should be my link placed is in google cache.
5. The last step - I check the HTML source to make sure there are not nofollow tags.

phpBB trick how to reduce forum spam
I run a small phpBB forum. 3 days after launching this forum I got my first spam posts. A week later I needed 15 minutes a day to delete all the spams and bann the spammers. So I was looking for another solution then useless captcha.
I found good advise how to reduce forum spam. It is nice and easy solution. Because spammers use robots to make registrations and they never visit your sign up form. They go directly to forum/profile.php?mode=register&agree=true. If you change the word agree (e.g. forum/profile.php?mode=register&agreement=true) you stop more then 90% of them.
How to change it? You can use total commander and search using alt + F7 for phrase agree=true in you phpBB directory. In the files where you will find this phrase use ctrl + h to find and replace.
After making this the spam was really reduced. Time from time I get a registration from a user who never make a post. But no one wrote single spam post.
